What Is a Copper Nickel Slip On Flange?

A copper nickel slip on flange is a flanged pipe connection designed to slide over the outside diameter of a pipe before welding. Copper nickel slip on flanges fit over the pipe end and are secured by welding. They provide a bolted connection for valves, equipment and removable pipe sections in seawater service.

Compared with a weld neck flange, the slip-on design allows the pipe to be positioned through the flange bore before welding. For demanding cyclic service, thermal loads or applications where the piping design requires a butt-welded connection, a weld neck flange may be more appropriate.

For copper nickel piping, material selection is particularly important because the flange may operate directly in seawater or another corrosive medium. HC Aluminum supplies both 90/10 copper nickel and 70/30 copper nickel options depending on the service conditions and engineering specification.

Copper Nickel Materials for Slip On Flanges

CuNi 90/10 — UNS C70600

C70600 is widely used for slip-on flanges in seawater cooling lines, shipboard piping and desalination systems. This 90/10 copper nickel alloy combines good resistance to seawater corrosion with ease of fabrication, making it a practical choice for many marine piping installations.

HC Aluminum supplies C70600 slip-on flanges to match project requirements for pipe size, flange dimensions and material specification. For an overview of other flange configurations in this grade, see our 90/10 copper nickel flange range.

CuNi 70/30 — UNS C71500

C71500 contains approximately 30% nickel and generally offers higher strength and greater resistance to seawater erosion-corrosion than C70600. It may be specified for more demanding marine service, although alloy selection should also account for flow conditions, water quality and the piping design.

Our 70/30 C71500 copper nickel flanges include slip-on options manufactured to the specified dimensions and applicable material requirements. Where a project calls for non-standard dimensions, production can follow customer drawings.

C70600 vs C71500 Copper Nickel Flanges: Which Grade Should You Specify?

Grade Typical selection considerations
C70600 — 90/10 copper nickel Commonly specified for seawater cooling, shipboard piping and desalination systems. Often selected for its balance of seawater corrosion resistance, fabrication characteristics and cost.
C71500 — 70/30 copper nickel Considered where the design calls for higher strength or greater resistance to erosion-corrosion under suitable service conditions. It is not automatically required for every seawater installation.

Temperature, flow conditions, seawater quality and the connected piping material all affect selection. Polluted water, excessive local velocity and poor commissioning practices can reduce service life even when a suitable alloy has been specified.

Standards for Copper Nickel Slip-On Flanges

DIN 86033 for Shipboard Piping

DIN 86033 is used for copper alloy slip-on flanges in shipbuilding applications. For a repair or replacement, check the existing connection as well as the standard reference: nominal size alone does not establish whether two flanges will fit together.

EEMUA 234 for Offshore 90/10 CuNi Systems

EEMUA 234 addresses 90/10 copper nickel piping for offshore applications, including solid and composite slip-on flange arrangements. It is relevant to seawater services such as cooling and firewater systems where the project specifies this publication.

ASME B16.5 for NPS and Class-Based Connections

ASME B16.5 covers pipe flanges and flanged fittings within NPS 1/2 through NPS 24, with size availability depending on the pressure class. It addresses pressure-temperature ratings, materials, dimensions, tolerances, marking and testing requirements.

Where Copper Nickel Slip On Flanges Are Used

Copper nickel slip on flanges are used to connect seawater piping components where corrosion resistance, practical installation and future maintenance all matter. At Haomei, we supply copper nickel flange solutions for marine and industrial piping projects, with material selection based on the service conditions and connection requirements.

For seawater piping, flange selection involves more than the alloy name. Pressure rating, temperature, pipe dimensions, vibration, gasket compatibility and the consequences of leakage should all be considered before the connection is specified.

Haomei can review your required flange size, pressure class, copper nickel grade and connection details to help identify a suitable supply option for your project. View 70/30 Copper Nickel Flanges or Request a flange quotation .

Slip On vs Weld Neck Flanges

Copper nickel slip on and weld neck flanges use different pipe connection methods, so the suitable type depends on the piping layout, welding procedure, operating conditions and applicable flange standard.

A slip on flange is fitted over the pipe and normally attached with fillet welds. This configuration can be practical for systems where straightforward fabrication and installation are permitted by the project specification. A weld neck flange has a tapered hub and is connected to the pipe by a butt weld, providing a more continuous transition between the pipe and flange.

Item Slip On Flange Weld Neck Flange
Pipe Connection Fits over the pipe and is normally secured by fillet welds. Uses a tapered hub and butt-weld connection.
Fabrication Can simplify alignment and fabrication for suitable applications. Requires preparation and execution of the butt-weld joint.
Typical Selection Used where the project design permits a slip-on connection. Often selected where structural continuity, cyclic loading or project-specific welding requirements are important.
Application Decision Depends on piping design, operating conditions and applicable specification. Depends on piping design, operating conditions and applicable specification.

Flange selection should be based on the piping design, operating conditions, welding requirements and applicable specification, rather than on flange price alone. For systems that call for a butt-welded connection, see our Copper Nickel Weld Neck Flanges for more information on this flange configuration.

Solid vs. Composite Copper Nickel Slip On Flanges

Copper nickel slip on flanges can be supplied in either solid alloy or composite construction, depending on the piping layout, pressure requirements and project specification.

Solid Copper Nickel Slip On Flange

A solid copper nickel slip on flange is manufactured from copper nickel alloy through the main flange body. The material is continuous across the component, making this design suitable when the flange material is required to match the associated copper nickel piping system.

Solid construction is commonly specified where material continuity, corrosion resistance and the project material standard are important considerations. The flange can be produced to the required dimensions, bore, pressure class and connection details.

CuNi Composite Slip On Flange

A composite copper nickel slip on flange combines a copper nickel wetted section with a separate backing flange, which may be manufactured from carbon steel or another specified material.

In seawater piping, the copper nickel portion remains in contact with the service medium, while the backing flange provides the mechanical bolting arrangement. This construction can reduce copper nickel usage where the piping design and applicable specifications allow it.

For marine systems where alloy cost, corrosion resistance and flange assembly all need to be considered together, composite construction can be a practical alternative to a fully solid flange.

The appropriate configuration depends on the operating pressure and temperature, piping design, corrosion requirements, bolting arrangement and applicable project standards. Where a composite flange is specified for the project, a copper nickel composite slip on flange can be supplied according to the required design and specification.

FAQ – Copper Nickel Slip On Flanges
